IBCSG Study 10-03
This study has examined whether removal of the armpit (axillary) lymph nodes is necessary in some older (60 years and over) women diagnosed with early breast cancer.
The main end point of this study was to evaluate quality of life reported by the patient and by research staff at sequential time points. Early results concluded that avoiding axillary clearance for this group of older women (median age 74 years in both treatment arms); results in similar efficacy with improved quality of life in the first 6-12 months following surgery. To date there is no difference in disease free and overall survival. |
